Live The Truth

Recently on a leisurely stroll through the Target dollar aisle, I came across a small section with lots of makeup and bath accessories, including this cute little handheld mirror. But on second glance, I noticed that scrawled across the mirror were the words “Live Your Truth.” It took me a second before the whole weight of those words settled onto me. My initial stream of consciousness went something like this: Live Your Truth. What in the world does that even mean? I don’t know that I’ve ever seen a more obscure statement. Live your truth? Is that an invitation to just live in whatever way that you feel so led - in whatever way that makes you happy? Is that encouragement to do and say and be just whoever you feel like being?

And after a moment, I realized something. Yes. That’s exactly what that mirror is saying. That’s exactly what is being encouraged here. That’s exactly what the world wants me to believe and buy into. That I can live my own truth. That I can be whoever or whatever I so choose. That I can step outside of the reality of actual truth, and live what I’ve decided is true for me.

The reality is, there is no such thing as “my truth.” It just doesn’t exist. There is only truth. Not mine. Not yours. Not theirs. Just truth.  And friends, The truth has a name and it’s Jesus Christ. He is the truth. In fact, He gave himself that name in John 4:6 when He said, “I am the way and the truth and the life; no one comes to the Father except through me.” According to the original Greek the word, truth in this verse means “verity,” “reality,” and “purity from all error or falsehood.” Read that again. “Purity from all error or falsehood.” You really want to know “my truth?” The truth of who I was, is that I was covered up in error and falsehood. The truth of who I was, is that I was in desperate need for someone to reach down into my depravity and save me. The truth of who I was, is that I was devastatingly lost and ultimately hopeless. That’s “my truth.” And I don’t WANT to live it, because its not worth living.

But THE, that’s a different story. He IS verity. He IS reality and He IS most certainly pure from all error or falsehood. He is Life. He is Salvation. He is The Word. He is the Light of the World and the Bread of Life. He is the Gate for the Sheep and the Good Shepherd. He is the Vine. He is the Way and the Truth and the Life and our ONLY HOPE. He holds the key to abundant life here and eternal life in heaven, and He is the one and only way to get there.

Friends, that’s the truth. That’s the truth that we ought to live daily. Not some made-up, do-what-makes-you-feel-good, “you-do-you” kind of mess. Those are lies from the enemy to render us useless and ineffective. The devil wants us to “live our truth” so he can continue to trap us in our own deceit and defeat. He wants us to believe the lies because He knows The Truth too. He’s seen God’s glory and experienced God’s power and knows that his own demise is certain. IT IS FACT.

There is one way. There is one life. There is one truth. There is only Jesus - the Truth worth living.
